Spellsword deck for test

I really like the idea behind this deck, so I’ve started to test it in rank 2 ladder with a few personal tweaks:

-3 Kvatch Soldier, -1 Morthal Executioner, -1 Black Worm Necromancer, -1 Golden Saint, -1 Bone Colossus, -1 Nahagliiv

+3 Deadly Draugr, +1 Lucien Lachance, +2 Loyal Housecarl, +1 General Tullius, +1 Blood Magic Lord

Loving it so far, because it really feels fresh and way different than the common board flood approach.

How has Tullius been so far? I was considering including him in mine, but I was concerned about how good he would be in a non-tokens build.

I just added him to mine, but haven’t played him yet. My Midrange Spellsword is a bit different than this one, no Mortal Executioners or even Divine Fervors or Hive Defenders. I run many more purple so I can run my Stalwart Ally. And they are great. I do run a couple heal potions, which frequently ensure I have higher HP by turn 5/6. Frequently a turn 5 Black Root Necromancer revives either a Young Mammoth or, god help them, a stalwart ally on turn 5.

Anyway, just wanted you to understand my deck before I add to this conversation. I notice that very often I have many minions on the board. Sometimes I need to trade, sometimes not. But when you have 3-5 minions on the board and they aren’t tokens like Token Spellsword, I would have to figure that makes General Tullius even more powerful. For example, when if he is behind a Stallwart Ally? If they don’t have removal for him, they’re done. Also, you can drop him on the turn before you trade part of your board away.

My personal opinion is that Tullius is an auto-include in pretty much any Spellsword build. Even if your board is empty, it’s still 12 points worth of stats for six mana, distributed in three bodies, placing a guard in each lane and gaining at least additional +2/+2 when those guards are removed. It is always strong, and the three Divine Fervors in the deck just make it even better.

What I’m testing right now, however, is completely removing Morthal Executioner, because in my experience they tend to be an awful late game draw. Currently testing a couple of good-old Crushing Blows in their place right now, although I may eventually return to them.

I have had a lot of success with Dawnstar Healer, btw. I wouldn’t run three, but two seem decent. I own only one, so only run one, but they can cause some humongous swing turns to set up your hit point totals to allow your Necros and Golden Saints. They can also allow a small early board to break a rune and heal you for 3 on turn 4, typically. This opens up your turn 5 necro. Just make sure to kill off Mammoth first =D

Another crazy good minion in this deck is Stronghold Eradicator. Both of these cards were in JustinLarson’s underused card video btw. This 5 drop 6/6 is a beast of stats, and is super sneaky in pulling out minions in the stealth lane so you can trade on your terms. If I have it in hand, I try to occupy the stealth lane to set it up. They will counter with a valued minion, like a Werebat, even behind a taunt and you just drop the Eradicator and trade your Haunting Spirit into it or something. Hilarious.

By the way, this midrange spellsword does indeed suck badly against Ramp Scout. I wasted a lot of time at rank 1 getting town up by scout ramp. Finally moved back to my spellsword control and won 4 in a row against scouts. they are a plague at rank 1, anyway.
