Howdy! When I first started TESL back in August I took a budget spellsword control deck to legend. After getting legend with various decks last season, I decided to revisit my roots as a control player. My collection had gotten much larger and the meta has changed drastically.

I started using Spellsword Control at 0 stars rank 4. During that time I tracked my wins and losses vs each class. Here are the numbers:

2/0 – Sorcerer
2/1 – Monk
1/2 – Warrior
1/2 – Crusader
3/0 – Battlemage
4/4 – Spellsword
5/2 – Mage
8/2 – Archer
10/4 – Scout
13/4 – Assassin

Equaling a 49-21 record or ~%70 win-rate.

There are a few card/tech choices that a lot of people are probably questioning (Priest of the Moons is a card?!). Or the fact there is no ramp.

Let’s cover the ramp first. Tree Minder and Hist Grove are bad in Spellsword. They do not help you control the board when you will be playing from behind most of the game in most matchups. You do not need Hist Grove to win the control mirrors either. Control Spellsword is favored vs other control decks. It is also unreliable only having 6 ramps spells. This requires you to hit 3 of them and 1 of those obviously need to be a Hist Grove to get the value out of 15 mana. Having 6 threats is much better for this deck.

Most people elect to run Dragontail Savior rather than something like Priest of the Moons. While the bigger body can be relevant when your opponent coins out a Cutpurse turn 1 or a Kinsman turn 2, I find that the match-ups where this is happening the most are Assassin or Archer and Priest of the Moons is actually pretty good here. He trades with archers early drops and helps win the HP battle to keep them off turn 4-6 Soulrests and Jarls. Against Assassin it can pretty much trade with anything they run early on except a Traitor and the life gain + body is really helpful vs a deck that can put out an obscene amount of damage.

Next is Immolating Blast. (WHY IS HE PLAYING THAT CARD?!) <-- Everyone who has ever been wrecked by that card. This is probably one of the most underrated cards in the game. Most consider it a poor man's Dawn's Wrath. I beg to differ. The board wipes function differently and are better in different situations. You can set up this card very nicely where it can act as a complete wipe on some occasions and your opponent rarely will play around this. This card wins games.Archein Elite. Another underrated card. 5 toughness allows it to survive burn easily and trade with many of the common 4 power creatures that cost 3-5. Having lethal ensures it is always at least a 1 for 1, usually more.If anyone has any questions about other cards, potential replacements, etc. Feel free to leave a comment or message me on the TESL discord. You may also catch me in some streams. I regularly visit CVH and Chesspieceface!
