If you're looking for a deck that can hold its own against aggro but still beat down a control deck, mid mage does a good job. The strategy of this deck is to let your opponent hit you more often than is usually healthy, swing with prophecies (there are 21) and heal back up with Dawnstar Healer as you continue to go face. This deck does poorly against control that draws well, and you can sometimes get out-aggro'd if you don't draw your Dawnstar but that's rare.

I've experimented a lot with the new cards and some of the rally cards are pretty good. Beefing up an Eastmarch Crusader so that it doesn't have that critically low 2 health is really nice. I've experimented a bit with the exalt cards, and the only one that seemed somewhat consistently good was Ghostgate Defender and to be honest, it wasn't strictly better than including other cards.

You might notice no Hive Defender. I know, it's strange, but I seem to do so well without it and I can't think of another card to get rid of for it. Phalanx Exemplar has been working too well for me to get rid of it and the 4 slot is just crowded as it is. Call me crazy but it just works.

I've tried Haafingar Marauder a bit here and there but the poor guy is just not very good anymore. Too many bad items. I've also played around with a few other cards, the hardest of which to cut was Camlorn Hero. He fits the deck, but my strategy really relies on keeping board control and I already have a hard time keeping Eastmarch Crusaders alive.

Do you really need ice spike for face damage?

If it only did face damage, I wouldn't run it. Drawing a card is really useful against control. What would you replace it with?
Ice spike looks me like a dead draw, unless you are in late game vs control. Put Lurking Crocodile if you want to keep the same curve.
Cards that draw cards are never dead draws - they can't be, they're cycle. Funny enough, I used to have Lurking Crocodile in this list. IMO it is a low performer. I have enough prophecies and Ice Spike helps me be magicka efficient in turns 4 and beyond due to all my 2 and 3 drops.
Mystic Dragon over Hive Defender? I get wanting 21 prophecies, but Mystic Dragon sucks imo :/

Also why no ayyyyyyrenn? Especially since you have the ice spikes?

Because what I have works. Why not try it out, you'll see.
