This list was played to a #6 legend finish April 2018. I'm not going to lie, it has felt more powerful than just about any other deck I have played in this game at any point in time. This is the definition of a tempo deck, rather than permanently dealing with its opponents threats it runs 7 (7!) shackle effects to lock them down as well as a wide range of ways to protect its threats. Gloomlurker, wardcrafter, and shadowmaster all work over time in a deck with many vulnerable threats that are worth protecting (skulk, mournhold, gambler etc). Speaking of gambler, it is my pick for the card in HOM with the highest overall power. This deck fully maximizes it, helping protect it, utilizing its 4/3 body very effectively, and providing tons of fodder worth less than a card to discard to it (steel daggers, eldergleam animals, curses pulled by skulk) but doesn't do so to support gambler, it wants to run those cards anyway. Locking down the opponent long enough to smash them low before they start to stabalize is also a viable win condition because of the massive amount of reach the deck employs. As a whole this is a remarkably synergistic deck but also happens to be able to run an extremely high percentage of the most powerful cards in the game. We'll see if the list evolves more as other strong players mess around with it but I can assure you, you will be seeing a lot more of this deck in the future.

I lost 2-3 r1 to eventual finalist petamax. Felt bad to lose that early on but still felt solid and if I'm gonna lose to someone I'd prefer it be a great player who was well prepared for the tournament like him. His mono-red archer really overperformed, when we briefly chatted after the game it was clear it surprised both of us. The huge number of ways to trick combat combined with card draw can be hard to deal with. There was one turn where I likely misplaced lane to go for a race but I don't think I would have won otherwise. Though had I won that game prob would have won the series. Any time that the games are close and competitive I am happy, and it was cool to see him do so well at the event. Side note- he is an absolute animal on abomination, obviously its his design to begin with but his play makes it look way better.

Feels bad to match up with a finalist round one, but you gotta beat everyone to be #1 as they say... Yeah Petamax's abomination was insane specially in the semi-finals - to be fair he was also pretty good at drawing namira's in time.

Aspirant is certainly worthy of further testing though i would say quartermaster would actually not be the cut were you do do so although I understand the 1 to 1 comparison of the 2 cards might make it seem so. Quartermaster is actually one of the most important cards in the deck imo for several reasons. For one as you said, gambler fodder. Also getting ahead on board quickly, something aspirant does equally or maybe slightly better. But maybe most importantly gives the deck a way to trick combat and a mana efficient way to push damage in daggers. The deck has many ways to protect its threats and stall those of its opponents but when it comes to manipulating the way combat math works it is generally pretty weak outside of the fact that it ussualy gets to choose its trades regardless of lane because of its shackles and cover effects. Daggers give you an out to do this and being able to take down an indominable ordinator or the like with a 4 pwr creature or a barrow stalker with a 2 power creature etc is a very big game. So it sures up a weakness of this deck. In addition aspiriant is a card which asks you for many ways to trick combat, it needs to be able to favorably trade to work, and again the decks control of trades and ability to force trading to occur on its turn assists in this, but its lack of an ability to pump its creatures (really just daggers, tomes, and mace) create many moments where it is unable to take full advantage of its ability. I promise you this deck doesn't want a vanilla cmc1 2/1.

Mulligans always change depending on matchup (which itself can be more or less important depending on whether you know your opponent's list) as well as whether you are on the ring. In general you ideally want to hit a 2 and a 3 every game and that's the main priority. If you feel you have a solid early game though you can sometimes mull redundant threats in search of your power cards (i.e. if my opener is quartermaster, wardcrafter, gloomlurker I probably mull one of the 2s to try to make sure my hand isn't too light on gas and increase my chances of hitting a power 3). Also, you should remember that some of your 2s and 3s are reactive while others are proactive and depending on the matchup which you keep will change. For instance against skulk decks you usually keep a harpy but if you are trying to go under your opponent you usually won't. Everything is relative and exactly how I mull changes as I play around with the deck in different matchups so the best thing is to stay open to the many reasons you might choose to change your mulls in different circumstances.
Great deck. I almost got through rank 1 undefeated. I lost a couple really close matchups against scout twice where I couldn't find my burst to close it out after getting hit with DV, and once bc of cloudrest prophecy against midrange hlaalu. However, I was able to bounce back and got to legend with a 10-3 record in rank 1. Thanks!

Nice! Yeah the scout matchup can be pretty frustrating because it often feels like neither player has much agency (if they get 1-2 lvl 3 drains early they win, if they don't you win) but there is still play to it and figuring out how much you realistically need to extend on board in the matchup to close is key. Also they don't interact with gambler outside of crushing blow and shadowfen so you can typically continue regasing longer than many control matchups. Of course 7/7 bats also shut the door harder than other control matchups. And yeah the hlaalu matchup is really fun. There is tons of manuevering you can do and I always find my games very challenging in the matchup (though i think assassin is quite favored in it).

I run a similar conscription deck. It barely gets to conscript on games i win. Was always a fan of this idea.
