I’ve made a lot of decks since the latest expansion, but this one is by far my favorite. I keep going back to it because well, I play the game to have fun (but only if I can win a lot too, of course;-). It feels like a nicely worn pair of shoes… that can also kick some ass. Pun times!
After many many iterations over the last few weeks, the deck finally has it it all: A ton of fun little combos, plenty of anti-aggro tools, card draw, recursive removal, ramp, tempo generation, and a whole lot more. My favorite part is that it isn’t overly reactive or top-heavy. Part of me loves to play a good control deck, but honestly, I hate sitting around for an hour waiting to finally get lethal threats going. I’d much rather be proactive and put my opponent under pressure the moment I get control of the board. Suddenly putting your aggro opponent on their back foot during the middle turns is a very satisfying feeling (“no, I’m going to beat YOU up!”). I like that.
As for card choices/omissions, please feel free to ask any questions and I’d be happy to explain my thought process. Many decisions were made while asking, “Yeah, but can it survive against aggro?” or “Yeah, but can it outlast control?” The answer to both of these is now ‘probably’, depending on the draws of course.
Anyway, I’ve been having a blast playing it and I hope you will too.
A quick and dirty mulligan/matchup guide:
Aggro: If it doesn’t kill or shackle something, throw it back. Survive and get on the board asap. Be prepared to lose some life in the mid turns while you set up your counter-board. Don’t be afraid to race once you’ve stabilized a bit. Trying to kill everything forever will not work with this deck. You need to get to a spot where you can kill them in a couple turns if they continue ignore your threats.
Control: Look for proactive opening hands with a decent curve. Get on the board asap and keep dropping threats and going face. Remember: They DON’T have infinite removal (though it may seem that way sometimes… sigh).
Midrange: Pretty broad category here, but yeah… Keep the lowest-costed cards that match up best against the cards you expect to see from your opponent. You want to be as proactive as possible and look for opportunities to seize the initiative. Being the ‘face guy’ in most of these matchups is definitely the way to go. If your opponent feels compelled to trade with your creatures, then you’re half way to victory.
Combo: I would treat this matchup the same as control. They’re going to draw a lot of cards, so you should do a lot of damage in the mean time. It’s definitely not the time to get cute with a lot of fancy play/card draw. Ignore their board if you can. Of course, sometimes you gotta kill something and that’s just the way it goes. Hopefully it’s not that way in real life too.
So yeah, that’s about it. I don’t really see anything like this deck on the ladder and there doesn’t seem to be a dominant Telvanni list at all, so there’s definitely a home for it out there. I’ve played it at the 100-200 legend level and done quite well. If you’re a casual player, but you still like winning, this deck will also serve you quite well.
I would love to hear your feedback or discuss the deck with you. Upvotes are always appreciated because they make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Good luck in all your games. Thanks for reading!

Update 1.1: More tweaks to survive aggro. The less aggro you’re seeing, the greedier you can make this list. Most changes I make will reflect this. Barilzars tinkering is the most fun you can have with this deck, so might as well have two copies of it. Could easily be another reverberating strike. Also, vicious dreugh was a necessary evil when over half my matchups were hilaluu. It leaves the deck when that’s not the case in favor of draw cards.

I play a different style of Telvanni, but Spymaster and Messenger are equally important for the same reasons (resists aggro and buys you time).
