This deck relies on Master of Thieves and, to a lesser extent, Thieves’ Den. The mana curve is meant to be low- to mid- so that you likely have early plays.

I’ve been playing with Pilfer for some time now, and this is the current version. It plays well, and most important, is a lot of fun. Its generally competitive, though it will get out-played b y a number of the top tier decks out there.

++Key Goal: Keep a Pilfer on the board for the arrival of the Master of Thieves. When that happens, wreck face.

++Secondary Goal: Use Thieves’ Den to create pressure and grow your force. When/if Master of Thieves drops with Thieves’ Den out, everyone gets to join the pilfer / double attack party.

++Play: The cheap guards are in there as ablative armor to protect your pilfer’ers. Play the guards early and often, and generally refrain from playing Pilfer’ers without a Guard escort unless you can do multiples at the same time. Try to drop Pilfer’ers in different lanes to mitigate lane clearance. Attack early (as painful as it may be) to get your Pilfer’ers up to 3 or 4.

The tempo balance is a difficult one. You want to attack each turn to grow your cards, but you hate to give away the free cards without a killing blow. Sorry, I dont have a great answer for this, but, frankly, attacking and growing your cards is fun — so I default to that. This deck works best by creating pressure on your opponent and forcing them to make poor trades (using high mana cards on your relatively cheap creatures)

The non Pilfer cards are there for either board control (Viper, Pet, Crushing Blow and Javelin) for lending the deck some Charge (Shadowmere, Bat and Racer), or in the sole case of Armor – to protect the cards on the table (or to lend the extra oomph to knock out a big opposing Guard).

After Master of Thieves your most valuable card on the bard is the Highwayman. Try top keep one on the board at all times. By mana point 5+ you likely have the ability to play 2 or 3 cards in your hand a turn — and that can leave you with an empty hand quick. Highwayman alleviates that problem. Likewise, Shadow Shift helps generate cards, feel free to use it to nab a card even when the shift doesnt make a lot of tactical sense.

in the case of the Charge cards, they can serve as closers if you have Thieves’ Den out (and if you have Master of Thieves too? Oh yes. So much yes).

Tenmar is a beast when teamed with the Master. From outset thats 2+3+4 = 9 damage.

The shenanigans really start if you have two Master of Thieves in play. Tenmar and Elsweyr love that.

++What to Watch out For: Decks with lots of guards, particularly big ones- obviously this makes it impossible to pilfer. Decks with lost of clear/control. You can empty your hand quick, so unless there is a need (say, to counter aggro), its often a good play to wait until mana point 3 to start laying your creatures.

Descendant of Alkosh is a neat card, but it is SLOW. Its not as impressive as one might want it to be — especially when it generates the Guard keyword and can no longer be shielded by your other ablative Guards. So, the tendency is with an unlimited budget to add a third, but its not worth it. Likewise Lookout. In a deck that is already a bit slow — its too vulnerable and too expensive to boast multiple copies. One is enough (though it is a blast when it hits).

This is not a great late-game deck. If you get to mana point 9 and arent about to finish off your opponent, you are likely done for. Hope to draw Tazkad.

I’ve tried Quin’rawl a few times, but it generally is too expensive to be worth including. By the time you are ready to play him, the game is likely already won or lost.
