Hello.

I’m Nolyn aka Bettorup. I live in North Dakota, USA. I’m a professional musician and audio/video producer. I’m in my late thirties, and I love TESL. Thanks for being here!

Overview

This deck is based on my tempo moose assassin deck. Please check out that deck and post when you get a moment. There’s a lot of overlap that you may find... mooseful.

Ahem.

Anyway, welcome to the Dagoth version of that deck. Having access to red means more high quality charge creatures, Withered Hand Cultist for tempo gain, as well as some serious mid-game card draw. There’s a bit of greed in here, which can be shaved down depending on what you’re seeing on the ladder, but it doesn’t feel like too much greed at the moment. I do need more data to be sure.

Basic Strategy

We typically want to be aggressive whenever possible, but we do have the tools to play a more board-centric strategy, depending on the matchup. Going face could be a terrible mistake, or it could absolutely be the right approach. It depends on highly dynamic factors. That said, I believe the deck can race fairly well thanks to our shackle package. In general, I find myself breaking runes more often than not throughout the game.

General game strategy tangent

Speaking of, when to control board or whether or not to break runes is the hardest part of the game to master in my opinion, as it varies wildly depending on your matchup, your current hand, and the board state. Practice and honest evaluation are key. Giving your opponent extra cards should never be taken lightly.

I wish I could give a one size fits all approach to piloting this or any deck, but I just can’t. It’s a mistake to play any deck or matchup dogmatically. At the start each game, I suggest making a general assessment about the matchup. Is it good or bad? Are you likely to want to be the aggressor or the controller? How do your early game creatures line up against creatures and/or removal of your opponents’ class? I think this assessment is critical, as it’s your only guide until you get more information to work with during the game.

At the end of the game, remember compare your early game assessment to your post game analysis. Were you right or wrong with your early assessment? How should you adjust your approach for similar matchups in the future? Doing so can be extremely helpful in future games.

Ask a lot of questions during the game as well. E.g. What cards is my opponent likely running based on what I know? What lane should I develop which creature in and why? How likely is my opponent to have a specific card based on what I’ve seen so far? How do the creatures in my hand line up with my opponent’s future creature drops? (This can help you decide where to develop your board and in what order). Is it more important to ensure a fair trade with my creatures this turn or efficiently utilize my available magicka? The questions go on and on.

Often these questions are hard to answer, but doing so (to the best of your ability) is one of the best ways to get better at making future decisions in the game. Okay, enough of this lengthy general strategy tangent already!

Post superfluous tangent wrap up

I’m sure I will be streaming with this deck at some point in the near future. I’d be stoked if you dropped by. You can find me @twitch.tv/bettorup

As always, I’d be happy to discuss card choices in the comments. There are no dumb questions if you’re new to the game or gaming in general. I’m also willing to do a more detailed write up if the deck gets enough interest.

Until then, thank for reading! I hope you enjoy the deck. Have a gosh darn heck of a good day!

2.0 update: Adjustments to keep up with the meta I've been seeing. It's possible that 3 fell the mighty is what you want, but this is where I'm at now.

So far, so good. Took it to ladder after a few bouts in casual and am on a winning streak w/ it (10 so far). Wasn't uber confident since I rarely play Dagoth, but was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the write-up and deck list, Bettorup.

Nice! Glad to hear. Keep it up brother.
Deck is pretty boss, gotta admit
I took out the raiders and added hands of dagoths, because they are the reason one plays dagoth in the first place

I would cut baronesses before raiders. Also, why are you cutting raiders? Don’t you like doing 2-12 damage for a one-magicka investment? Dont you like your opponents burning ring charges and overspending to remove your one drop? Don’t you like triggering plot easily? I’ve been pretty happy with raiders after almost 20 games with him in there.

Also, I disagree about Hand of Dagoth. Clearly a great card. But there’s only so much top end I want to include in the list as to avoid clunky hands. The expensive cards I’ve chosen are either drawing me cards or doing immediate damage. HOD does neither. But as long as it works for you, that’s cool. Thanks for the comment!

Damn I should have clarified. I'm only missing the raiders and with any deck that runs them I always struggle to find a replacement. Therefore, I added a little top end.
But what Ive realized, is that by taking out the low end I've in a sense removed the power of the deck. Ive also did that to combat my opponent outvaluing me later. But it seems I've missed the point of avoiding the "later" and just going ham early. Granted this deck took me from rank 5 to 2,but I realize it could be so much more.

Do you have any suggestions for replacing?
Nice deck lists. I'm running Aspects of Hircine over the Baronesses though.

I’m forgetting the name of the green one drop (2/1) that has the recursive slay effect. I think that can be fairly solid as a replacement. Haven’t tried them though. If you do, please let me know how it goes. Thanks for the comment!

They're a great replacement, deck works like a charm. Took me from serpents tail rank 2 to legend in couple of days.
I gotta say this is a solid, solid deck. Really outperforms itself sometimes
