Introduction
This is my Control Mage deck list, which is probably my favourite deck as it is so strong. It has an especially high winrate against the many Scout and Archer decks that are on the ladder. It only really loses if you get terribly bad draws and/or prophecies and they’re aggro.
This is the uber control deck as it has tons of prophecies, big guards, removal (AoE and singular) and healing. You will love this deck if you played mainly Priest and Warrior in Hearthstone like I did.
Gameplan – Outvalue them
The main gameplan is to build up your hand in the early game using High Rock Summoners and Elusive Schemers and remove their minions with Firebolts and Crushing Blows. It’s even better if you manage to draw Cunning Allys or Daggerfall Mages so that you can simply trade with their minions while also filling up your hand. Your minions will often outvalue them and be a 2 for 1 or even more such as your guards and Daggerfall Mages. It’s absolutely fine to let them hit your face and proc your prophecies which will hopefully give you some healing. Usually, you will Ice Storm if you are behind then heal / guard and you’re not only back in the game but ahead since you have a much bigger card advantage. Mantikoras are the reason this deck excels at the late game and beats all other control decks. Also you will often Nahkriin into Odahviing, Miraak or Mantikora for the biggest tempo swing you will ever see.
Card Choices
Most cards in this deck are in every other successful Control Mage deck so I will not explain those choices since it should be obvious – if everyone runs it, why shouldn’t you?
However I will list the cards that make this list different to most Control Mage lists and explain why I’ve made these choices:
Desperate Conjuring: I know some popular Control Mage lists run this, including Blackfall, but some don’t so I’m going to go over why this card is a must-include. It shines in the late game. You only want to use this card on your 6+ cost minions. This list runs 3 Tigers, 2 Fate Weavers, 3 Mantikoras, Nahkriin and Odahviing. If used on Tigers (try to use when they’re had their uses and are damaged) or Fate Weavers, you are guaranteed to get either Shocking Wamasu, Indoril Archmage, Auroran Sentry, Tazkad the Packmaster, Spider Daedra, Falinesti Reaver or Vigilant Giant. All of those cards have amazing value in a Control deck and it is especially worth using on Fate Weavers as the stats are not that good and the reason they’re included is Fate Weaver’s prophecy and ability. If used on 10 drops, you will get an Iron Atronach or Odahviing, which can, again, be a massive tempo swing and most likely win you the game. If you do choose to use it on Odahviing (if it’s on low health for example), you will get a 14/14 creature.
Fire Storm: Most of the recent Control Mage lists don’t run this but I honestly think it is a mistake on their part since every time I have used it, it has been of great value to me. It completely destroys Assassins and Spellsword Tokens, which both are popular right now. Also what makes it amazing is its prophecy. If you get it from a prophecy proc at the right time, it basically wins the game for you if you’re vsing Assassin or Spellsword Token.
Fate Weaver: Old lists run 2 of these, which is where I got the idea from but most current lists do not run any. Like Fire Storm, I think this is a mistake on their part as it has gotten lots of value often. Worst case scenario you play it from your hand to draw a card. But even then you can use Desperate Conjuring to get one of them sweet 8 drops. This deck has several prophecies so you will often draw a prophecy from a Fate Weaver which is pretty amazing value. However, the best case scenario, which has happened to me several times, is when you get a Fate Weaver from a prophecy proc, then another one, then a prophecy card such as Healing Potion! It’s moments like that which make me glad that I play Fate Weavers. Often you will get it from a prophecy proc, so you will have gained a 3/3 body and an extra card for free, which is pretty good. An absolute must if you’re playing with Desperate Conjuring.
Cards I don’t run:
Shimmerene Peddlers: They suck in control mage. Fate Weavers are MUCH better as they guarantee a draw. 2/2 body is weak and this card is meant for Action Mage / Assassin, not Control Mage.
Telvanni Arcanist: You have 5 three-drop minions, you really don’t need any more, otherwise you’re going to suck against control.
