This encounter interesting because you are not able to directly summon creatures in the left hand lane. This lane, called the Mine Depths, also grants the players one Magicka each turn per creature present in that lane. The opponent begins the game with two 1/1 creatures, one being in each lane. This means they begin the game earning the bonus Magicka. Finally, the encounter gives the player a "Mine Cart" that will move a creature to the Mine Depths. When played, the card is then given to the opponent.

A mid-range Monk list is great for this encounter, because the player can take advantage of two tools that Monk has. First, the Monk class has access to plenty of lane movement effects. Shadow Shift, Grand Ball, Dune Smuggler, and Dune Stalker all help to "cheat" your way into the mine. This means bonus Magicka, which means more cards played, which in turn means an even greater board presence.

The other interesting card choices available to the Monk class are the cards that spawn creatures in both lanes. Scouting Patrol, for example, gets around the "creatures can't be directly summoned here" clause of the Mine Depths. Pack Wolf is another card that will create a creature in the other lane. Golden Saint can be a real game winning card if you have the health lead.

To beat the encounter, you want to fight for control of the board early. Try to get one or two creatures into the Mine Depths, as the Magicka advantage can help you snowball fast. If possible, avoid using the Mine Cart because your opponent will take advantage of it against you.

Check out the video below to see this deck list beat the encounter.
