For some reason I though, the summoned create would cost exactly the max magicka (or as closely as possible). But having 10 magicka and getting Insightful Scholar at late game is a complete disaster.
I had to remove this card from my deck - it is too unreliable.
Just to be clear, I think the cost of the card produced is randomized first before the card is selected. For example, if you have 12 max magicka, a cost value will be randomized between 0 and 12 (with each having equal chance), then a creature card matching that cost is randomly selected. If the randomized cost doesn't match any creature (e.g. if the number is 13), a creature will be created with power and health equal to that cost and no abilities. It's still a gamble, but it's a lot better than simply randomizing over all creatures, which could be one interpretation of the card's ability text.

I swear they updated this in the past week or something because I have been getting terrible luck since I posted this. Maybe I just got lucky before.
A lot of people prefer aggro and control decks. This card would ne far more valuble in a defensive ramp deck about increasing mana quickly and setting up guards. The higher your mana is the better as your chances move mpre toward the better. Defensive styles are key to this guard one mist assume.

I got Odahviing once in a tight contest which turned the tide, but it is indeed a gamble, like Mudcrab Merchant.
