First and foremost, I want to give credit where credit is due. This list is very much inspired by Warriors7. He was playing a very similar list at the end of last season, and it looked like a ton of fun. I decided to give something similar a go this season. Warriors7 hung out in my Twitch chat early in the season, and gave his stamp of approval on this version. It has been (unsurprisingly) very good. I’ve been using this list in the “Danger Zone” a lot this season.

This is a mid-range Archer list, and it contains several options for controlling the board. Controlling the field lane and applying pressure at the same time is very important. Mournhold Traiter and Goblin Skulk are both great early options for this deck. Goblin Skulk will fetch Curse when it triggers Pilfer, which can be used to make early trades favorable. It’s a great tool for dealing with pesky Ward creatures, and it can also setup Leaflurker later. Mournhold Traiter is great because it’s size means it survives most early trades, and it hits like a truck. The drawback from its Last Gasp is easily negated through cards like Curse, Skaven Pyromancer, or Rapid Shot in a pinch. Murkwater Shaman helps setup favorable trades as well, and if protected can outright win games against aggressive decks by itself. Belligerent Giant is one of the best cards for gaining tempo in the late game.

Outside of controlling the board, this deck has a fair amount of reach. Cliff Racer, Underworld Vigilante, and Tazkad the Packmaster all help drive games home in the final stretch. Morkul Gatekeeper can be paired with any of the Charge creatures to help close the gap.

Against control decks, Triumphant Jarl helps to make sure that you don’t run out of gas. Garnag, Dark Adherent can steal games if saved for key turns. Allena Benoch can help push through pesky Guard creatures or murder that impending Night Shadow in the Shadow Lane.

All in all, this is a competitive and fun list to play. There are plenty of changes that can be made, as the list is also rather flexible in a few areas. Feel free to experiment depending on what you are running into on the ladder.

Why don’t you like shadow shift in this list?

That’s a good question. I like using Shadow Shift, but it ultimately got cut in favor of Morkul Gatekeeper because I wanted the additional reach. The orc is great off of Prophecy, but he also is pretty good at tipping combat math in your favor. This list doesn’t utilize Astrid, FGR, or Unstoppable Rage. With the exception of the Brotherhood Slayer, there aren’t many times I want to take advantage of a “surprise” trade. The mobility is nice, but I’m often times trying to fight for the field lane and feel bad sending a body to the shadow lane. I really like the cycle that Shadow Shift offers, but I just felt like the orc was more consistent for me. It’s easily something that I could see people including though.
